Why the U.S. Announced It's Seeking the Death Penalty for the Boston Marathon Bombing Suspect

by John Spritzler

The U.S. government announced it will seek the death penalty for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bombing suspect. The government has presented to the public absolutely no evidence that Tsarnaev is guilty, and there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical of the government's story about the Tsarnaev borthers' guilt. This is why I suspect that the reason the government announced it will seek the death penalty is to persuade Tsarnaev to cop a plea so that the case will never go to trial and the government's lack of evidence will never be revealed.

The government frequently says it will seek a draconian sentence in order to persuade defendants to cop a plea. Were it not for this motive, the death sentence wold be hard to explain because the defendant is a very young man (20 years old), this is his first alleged offense, and he was clearly under the strong influence of his older brother who was killed shortly after the bombing.
